I finished the third installment of Fablehaven today, and it was spectacular. So intense. I love all the characters and how they are developing! The only thing that sucks is that I now have to wait for the next one to come out...who knows when that will be! I feel like my life is spent waiting for books to come out. The new Twilight movie looks amazing, and I'm beyond excited for the new book. Also, Prince Caspian comes out May 16th! Ah, it gives me chills when I think of it!
School is officially over for the summer. I'm a little sad, because I loved all my teachers and all the overwhelming talent they surrounded me these last few months, and also that I will have to go full time in about a week. UGH. I hate my job already I don't know how I'll survive full time. I suppose it's only for a few months. But I'm glad to actually have time to do something I want for a change. Hello video games, here I come!
I recently decided I am a feminist. There is so much happening in the world that is derogatory and disrespectful to women. It's difficult to remember sometimes that there is more going on out there besides the happenings in my own little bubble. Women are asked to dress modestly, because men just can't control themselves. Women in Afghanistan are forced to wear sheets over every inch of their skin, and the men say this is to protect them from being raped. Shouldn't women dress modestly to enhance their own self image, and show that we respect ourselves and our bodies? Shouldn't we get some recognition if we are these "superior sexual beings" with the enhanced ability to control ourselves? Women in Africa unceremoniously have their clitoris removed and vagina sown up, often with just a razor blade and no sterilization. The men blatantly state that this is to keep their women in order. Can you imagine childbirth? Even menstruation!? Heath care providers tell them that this is unnecessary and that it's detrimental to women's health, and they laugh and scoff. Female infants are killed in numerous places around the world. Female brides are burned by their in-laws in India if their dowry isn't large enough. I suppose it makes me happy that I live where I do, with the blessings I have, but I feel a need to help these down-trodden women everywhere, and to help them better their lives and self image. But, what's to be done? How do you change a patriarchal society that has persisted for eons?
